Child workers career fund is a worldwide campaign by Nishant Nihar. The campaign has seen enormous support from various leaders across the nation. The campaign highlights that as the Government of India has recently enforced a complete ban on child labour. But, what's the alternative left for them? What will they do once they are denied work? These children certainly did not come to work for fun, they came out of extreme compulsion of earning two square meals for themselves. As we know some friends who were working to feed their destitute mothers, little sisters and brothers. How will they live now? Can they go to school? Can they play in empty stomach? Can this law give them back their lost childhood? Poverty is the mother of all crimes, which may force them to beg or steal.

Nishant’s appeal to the Hon. Prime Minister that was published in The Statesman (Voices) on 19 October 2006. Here is what he appealed :

Subject: Students Campaign for Child Workers' Career Fund

TO

The Hon. Members of Parliament,

New Delhi, India.

SUB : Appeal to raise the demand for a Child Workers' Career Fund in the coming winter session of Parliament .

Esteemed Grandpas, Grannies, Uncles and Aunties,

I am a Std.VIII student of Bhubaneswar, Orissa concerned about my unfortunate friends working hard in our homes, hotels, match and cracker industry and watch us going schools. They are all like us, yet so different by birth - just because they are born in poverty! It's their age to play. It's their right to go to school. It's their natural claim to get love and affection. But, poverty forces their tiny tender hands to wash the dishes, roll matchsticks and pack explosive crackers. While you all create hue and cry in the parliament against the burden of school bags on our tiny shoulders, I have seen these poor friends of ours loading and unloading bags of rice in shops.

It's good that the Government of India has recently enforced a complete ban on child labour. But, what's the alternative left for them? What will they do once they are denied work? These children certainly did not come to work for fun, they came out of extreme compulsion of earning two square meals for themselves. I know some friends who were working to feed their destitute mothers, little sisters and brothers. How will they live now? Can they go to school? Can they play in empty stomach? Can this law give them back their lost childhood? Poverty is the mother of all crimes, which may force them to beg or steal.

I have already written to the Hon. Prime Minister on this issue and my open Appeal was published in The Statesman (Voices) on 19 October 2006. Here is what I appeal :

  • The Government should set up a Child Workers' Career Fund for rehabilitation and education of the rescued child workers.

  • Law alone cannot solve these problems of socio-economic compulsion. Conscience is more powerful than any constitution. Let's call people to give up their bad habits like smoking and drinking, stop the unnecessary pump and show in Diwali, New Year and other such celebrations; and contribute this money to this Fund.

  • My school friends have decided to skip one day's tiffin and share this amount with our poor child worker friends through this Fund.

  • Me and my younger sister Naimisha of Std.II did not burst crackers in Diwali, did not celebrate our birth days. We have reserved total Rs.4481.50 (including the amount in the savings box of Naimisha) to share with our poor friends as a little starting contribution for the Child Workers' Career Fund.

Future of a nation lies in the future of its children. I appeal you all to please spare a little time to think about the uncertain future of our helpless friends, who, by little alternation of fate, could have born as your children or grandchildren. Please, please, please return the innocent smiles of childhood back to their lips. Please build the foundation for a better future of India.

With regards,

Yours affly,

Nishant Nihar

TO

MR. SOMNATH CHATTERJEE,

HON. SPEAKER, LOK SABHA, INDIA.

Appeal for Child Workers Career Fund

Esteemed Nanajee,

Sorry to disturb you again and again. Since the Parliament has no Child Representative to put forth children's voice, I have no other way than knocking at your door of conscience.

Some MPs have responded to my earlier appeal to raise the issue in the Parliament and I forward some of them to you herewith.

Future of children is the future of a nation. Why cannot the whole house keep aside the political division and pass a resolution for the future of 1.26 crore poor child workers? Why cannot the Parliament show us - the future citizen of India - how to stand united on national and social problems?  Why cannot our Leaders teach us the values and responsibility of Leadership to care for the weakest of the weak? Afterall, what you do today will set the guidelines for us to repeat tomorrow.

I appeal you to set an example for us.

With high regards,

Yours affly,

Nishant Nihar

It's history. Perhaps for the first time in the history of Indian Parliament, children found a voice. That too through none other than the Speaker himself.

HATS OFF TO SPEAKER SHRI SOMANATH CHATTERJEE, DEAREST 'NANAJEE' OF WE THE CHILDREN !!!

My Dear Nishant,

I am very sorry for the great delay in formally acknowledging the receipt of your Email of 27 November, 2006.  I have been greatly impressed by what you have written.  I had circulated copies of your Email to the Leaders of different political parties in Lok Sabha, and it was also published in many newspapers.   Everybody has greatly appreciated the sentiments that you have expressed and I feel so proud that young citizens of our country are equally concerned with the future of the country, particularly about the future of our child workers.  I feel confident that children like you, will now and in future be able to make great contribution towards the development of our country and for solving many of the problems, which are still faced by the people.  I feel confident also about our country's glorious future particularly when young citizens like you are thinking on very correct lines.

I do not think example will only be set by us.  We are required to set xamples but I have greater faith in you, your friends and other young citizens of our country that they will set up examples for others to follow, which will be of greater benefit of our country.

With my love and very best wishes and wishing you a very very Happy New Year.

Yours affectionately,
(Somnath Chatterjee)

Dear Nishant,
You have indeed touched on a very important issue, that is, to come up with realistic funding support when passing idealistic bills.
I have often made similar points in parliament, for example, supporting the education cess since it overcomes a fundamental hypocrisy (we had earlier made education free and compulsory for children upto the age of 14, but were providing only 1/3rd of the funds necessary to actually make that happen).

I will indeed take up the matter in Parliament.

With best wishes,
Baijayant Panda, MP.

Dear friend,
I am deeply touched by your communication to me. It's nearly unbelivable that in this boarderless world of ours we experience the smae thing trying to propagate equality and justice as essence of humanity. But i take solace in the hope that it is only God that can shut a common man up.The hypocritical governments and leaders of our world can't do beyond what they do now.The voiceless will keep on having a diginified voice one way or the other.

Writing me from far away India is one consolation that truely, we are in a boarderless world, and like i said, the voiceless shall be given diginified voices. It's a pity the government stopped your father's idea from circulation, but i believe the idea still lives and will live forever until justice and equity is achieved for the voicless.

Just like your father, here in Nigeria, they have tried everything to stop this newspaper, but coming to the net to meet you has forged me on. They have made it impposile for me to operate the paper locally by stiffling my source of income, sabotaged the acceptance of the paper by the locals and incited the staff to work against the paper.

Please, as you have requested, what i want you mostly to do for me is to keep the spirit of propagating the voice of the voicless with diginity even in India.I am with you also.
remain blessed.

                 CHILD WORKERS' FUND

May we request our Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi to create a Career Fund for rehabilitation and education of child labourers. We, school children would donate our cracker budgets of Diwali for this fund and campaign in our schools to mobilise as much funds as possible. The rupees 750 crore annual cracker spending in India is enough to create a Career Fund of Rs 1,00,000 each for 75,000 child workers who are under 10 and employed in dangerous conditions.
